The Lab Manager is responsible for the overall operations of a specific laboratory area. These responsibilities include but are not limited to meeting client satisfaction goals, managing the human resources within the department, and ensuring health and safety and quality assurance plan compliance. Serves as a technical resource to department employees, as well as Project Managers, sales personnel, and clients. Make recommendations to laboratory management in regard to process improvements

  • Trains subordinates on work procedures.
  • Responsible for the consistent and proper use of backlog training and update process.
  • May upload data files to reporting system.
  • Interviews and evaluates candidates for job openings within area of responsibility.
  • Participates in subordinates career planning process, evaluations, and training. Initiates actions leading to their professional development (targeted training, temporary job assignments, etc.)
  • Sets standards for and monitors productivity within the group
  • Recommends process improvements to improve efficiency.
  • Expected to champion Health & Safety and assume ownership for the safety of those employees within her/his responsibility.
  • Develops and reviews standard operating procedures for the group, as needed, to address new or revised analytical methods.
  • Conducts subordinate annual formal performance evaluations, goals and development.
  • Monitors subordinates’ work daily to ensure both satisfactory productivity as well as compliance.
  • Develops and monitors group analysis schedules based on current and projected workloads and staffing.
  • Initiates improvements to procedures process, work methods, equipment performance and quality of service.
  • Communicates department issues and provides status reports to Laboratory Director and Project Managers.
  • Interprets company, divisional and laboratory policies and procedures to subordinates.
  • Accountable to meet On Time Delivery goal of greater than 90% within department.
  • May prepare and analyze samples for analysis based on method requirements.
  • Acts as problem solver for unique technical situations, making recommendations on data acceptability.
  • Responsible for maintenance of inventory within his/her group.
  • With Quality Control, determines acceptable corrective actions for the nonconformance occurring within his/her group.
  • Responsible for controlling costs within the group.
  • Responsible for upholding and enforcing Company policies, including but not limited to, Quality, Safety, Standard Operating Procedures, Ethics, and Harassment.
  • Supervises analyses on potentially hazardous samples.
  • May review data produced in assigned department and authorizes its release.
  • Recommends or initiates personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, bonus distribution, disciplinary measures or termination actions
  • Reviews and interprets results from samples analyzed.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous experience working in a related laboratory setting
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to suggest method modifications
  • Project Management Certification
  • Professional working proficiency in English is a requirement, including the ability to read, write and speak in English.
  • Proficiency with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
  • Continuing education in management
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills
  • Ability to multitask, as well as handle stress and a busy schedule
  • Laboratory Safety Certification
  • Ability to organize work flow and communicate clearly and concisely;
  • Previous experience working in a lab setting
  • Positive attitude toward quality control and safety procedures
  • Ability to plan for the future and have a vision for the team
  • Experience with metals preparation and digestion procedures
  • Experience with ICP-MS, ICP-OES, and Hg Instrumentation
  • Ability to manage the work of other personnel and interact well with staff, colleagues, managers, and clients;
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or related field
  • 3-5 years of Technical Supervision experience
  • Ability to motivate the team to excel technically and as a supervisor
  • Proficiency working with computers
  • Authorization to work in the US without restriction or sponsorship
  • Previous leadership experience in a technical or lab setting
