What you would be doing

  • Manage a team to provide subject matter expertise in process safety and act as the lead technical authority on all process safety.
  • Management of associated contracts including (e.g. third party technical safety, hazard assessment and dispersion modelling as required.)
  • Work with the Head of H&S management systems to identify and implement continuous improvement in process safety standards , procedures and guidance through simplification and standardisation
  • Support of selected Directors (eg Bioresources.) to develop H&S plans that deliver sustainable improvements in line with the wider Corporate H&S strategy.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key external stakeholders and regulatory bodies including Health and Safety Executive and Water UK.
  • Develop corporate H&S strategies and improvement programs for process safety based on Industry best practice and organisational needs through consultation with the H&S Leadership team.
  • Development, and continuous improvement of corporate process safety standards, procedures and guidance with a focus on major accident hazards
  • To identify and escalate critical process safety issues to the H&S Director and relevant Business Director so they can ensure the right level of support and intervention is allocated to help resolve the issue
  • Provision of accurate and up-to-date process safety information and advice to support legal compliance and continuous performance improvement
  • In collaboration with the learning and development team, enhance the process safety training program and develop process safety competence profiles for key operational roles and the wider health & safety team.
  • Line management of the Process Safety team to ensure that they are supporting the implementation of sustainable improvements across the business.
  • Ownership of the corporate process safety risk profile on behalf of the H&S Director and development of process safety improvement strategies to manage the risks and drive best in class performance.

  • Experience of leading, managing and developing a multi - disciplinary team
  • Experienced leader with the ability to identify talent, build, recruit and develop a high performing team
  • Proven track record in providing high levels of customer service and continuous improvement
  • Extensive experience in developing and implementing process safety standards and programs
  • Drive, resilience and ability to cope with the demands of leading and operating a diverse function
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a strong team player. Ability to build relationships and influence across UU and with key external stakeholders
  • Ownership of the corporate Process safety framework, standards, procedures and guidance
  • Qualified to degree level in an engineering discipline
  • Full UK Driving License
  • Detailed understanding of COMAH regulations, and experience of HAZOP and HAZID assessments, together with emergency planning
  • Experience of influencing, coaching and negotiation skills with senior leadership
  • A detailed understanding of Health & Safety legislation and with a proven track record of delivering sustained H&S performance improvement
