The Right of Way Agent assists American Electric Power (AEP) in acquiring land, rights, licenses, leases, and permits needed for the construction, operation, and maintenance of electric distribution facilities. This role also ensures the accuracy and safekeeping of AEP's extensive property records, supporting thousands of miles of infrastructure across multiple states.
Core duties include negotiating with landowners for acquisition rights, settling damage claims, researching property ownership in courthouses, and drafting a variety of legal documents such as easements, contracts, and permits. Agents provide functional support to other AEP business units, maintain detailed maps and progress reports, develop relationships with the public and government agencies, and promote safety practices while responding to customer inquiries related to right‑of‑way activities.
Candidates must meet education and experience requirements that vary by level, possess a valid driver’s license, and obtain a Notary Commission within six months of hire. The position involves sedentary work with occasional walking or climbing, travel throughout the assigned territory, and strong communication and computer skills. AEP offers competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and a commitment to an inclusive, customer‑first culture.
