The OSP Field Engineer collects detailed telecommunications data on‑site, validates existing designs, and documents aerial, buried, and underground fiber networks, including conduit, handholes, building entrances, and riser facilities. The role may also serve as an informal lead for junior staff and requires a working knowledge of fiber‑network technical aspects.
- Identify, photograph, and document OSP facilities such as cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, and handholes.
- Capture measurements of attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances to centerlines, property lines, and curbs.
- Record power and communication facility ownership on utility poles, as well as bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor information.
- Deliver detailed field notes and photographs to the engineering team and propose mitigation strategies for obstructions.
- Read digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings; utilize tools like measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finders, GPS devices, and laser rangefinders.
- Use electronic devices (iPad, iPhone, laptop) for data collection, file sharing, and communication.
- Follow OSHA, state, and local safety standards and work safely with or without supervision.

- 3+ years of experience in fiber‑optic/telecommunications construction; high school diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge of outside plant activities, make‑ready issues, and right‑of‑way/easement documentation.
- Ability to read as‑built prints, identify conflicts, and route lines; familiar with GIS/ESRI and shapefile functionality.
- Identify utility types and ensure compliance with regulatory standards (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC); proficient in Microsoft Office; AutoCAD a plus.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and pass pre‑employment drug screen and background check.
- Lift or move up to 50 lb, walk up to 3 mi on varied terrain, work outdoors 95% of the time, and travel up to 100% (including overnight stays).
