Substation Commissioning & Maintenance Manager

Description

This role oversees the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of substation apparatus across a transmission and generation system, leading a team of 10-15 technicians and apprentices. You'll manage multiple service centers and substations, ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance while collaborating closely with internal and external partners. This position offers a blend of leadership, planning, and field engagement with the opportunity to make a significant impact on system performance and operational excellence.

• Partner with leadership, vendors, and business units to improve AC/DC transmission performance.
• Oversee project schedules, resources, and completion milestones.
• Organize documentation to support FEMA public assistance when required.
• Negotiate with vendors and contractors for equipment and services.
• Maintain installation standards and ensure accurate documentation and as-built records.
• Stay current on system assets, technologies, and best practices related to substation operations.
• Lead and manage substation apparatus commissioning and maintenance activities across transmission, HVDC converter stations, generation sites, and distribution systems.
• Coordinate planning and construction efforts with internal departments.
• Recommend and prioritize equipment replacement and upgrade needs.
• Oversee lifecycle programs, including upgrades, replacements, and retirements of substation apparatus.
• Ensure all maintenance schedules meet internal standards and NERC compliance requirements.
• Manage substation equipment pools and ensure readiness for upgrades or emergency needs.
• Build and maintain relationships with distribution cooperatives, municipal utilities, and transmission stakeholders.
• Lead and validate testing, reporting, and documentation of apparatus maintenance.
• Provide daily leadership, coaching, and development for technicians and apprentices.

Requirements

• Demonstrated leadership experience within a technical or utility setting.
• Proven commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
• Preferred experience with transmission substations (69 kV+).
• 6+ years of experience testing transformers and breakers in an electric utility environment.
• Hands-on knowledge of power factor, turns ratio, winding resistance, and breaker timing tests.
• Two-year technical degree, completion of a four-year JATC apprenticeship, or a bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical preferred).
• Strong communication and multitasking skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure.

Schedule: Onsite; typical start around 6:30 a.m., Monday–Friday, with after-hours/weekend availability for emergencies

Salary: $135,000 – $150,000
