Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent collects facilities field data for updating records or preparing design documents, performing measurement, mapping, field photography, equipment inventory, staking, and other reconnaissance under senior technical direction. The position often works as a design or staking assistant with senior field staff and must adhere to Pike Engineering’s Core Values and Safety Manual, advocating safety and participating in safety initiatives. Data is gathered accurately using paper drawings, forms, electronic devices, digital cameras, and other formats specified by the project manager or client, and recorded using correct standards and symbology.
Position Overview: This is the first level of the field technician positions. The role may serve as a training slot for a Designer or CAD position within the organization. Desired qualifications include strong organization in actions and written communication, familiarity with common computer software such as MS Office Suite and CAD drafting systems if applicable, experience in design or line construction in a utility environment, and preferred knowledge of GIS systems and basic data structures. The incumbent must be highly self‑motivated, able to work independently, and able to work in an outside environment.
The role requires quick learning of technology tools such as handheld data collection units, laser range finders, digital cameras, and GPS receivers, and the ability to recognize the level of detail needed for accurate field inventory per project specifications. The incumbent may assist in power restoration during natural disasters, meet production targets, manage multiple tasks, and may need to travel overnight. A valid driver’s license is required, and the position emphasizes self‑motivation, independent work, teamwork, and customer orientation.
