Groundman - Underground (DUKE ENERGY)

Description

The Underground Groundman is an entry‑level position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of underground electrical distribution systems. The role operates at multiple sites and may require travel to other states based on customer demand.

Team members perform a range of underground electrical tasks while strictly adhering to safety protocols, maintaining equipment, and supporting the overall power delivery network.

• Perform new construction, maintenance, and repair of energized and de‑energized underground electrical distribution systems.
• Set pad‑mount transformers and assist with single‑phase transformer installation and hookup.
• Follow safety protocols, maintain minimum approach distances, and use proper PPE and hand tools.
• Operate and maintain company vehicles, equipment, tools, and radios.
• Conduct rigging, hand line work, knot tying, and use Kellum grips as needed.
• Perform bucket rescue/escape, work at heights, in confined spaces, trenches, and manholes.
• Inspect rubber goods, PPE, and check voltage on transformers and services.
• Travel long distances on short notice and work extended periods at various locations.
• Participate in VA‑approved apprenticeship program with GI Bill benefits for eligible veterans.

Requirements

No prior experience is required; candidates must be able to read and communicate in English, obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days (a CDL is preferred), and be willing to travel long distances on short notice.

The job involves frequent standing, walking, lifting over 50 lb, and working in various weather conditions, with exposure to fumes, noise, vibration, and other typical construction site hazards.

• Lift over 50 lb, climb various structures, and work in inclement weather.
• Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days (CDL preferred).
• Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and outside normal schedules.
