The Senior Plan Check Engineer is responsible for the technical review of construction documents for residential, multi‑family, and commercial projects, ensuring compliance with the California Building Standards Codes and referenced standards. The role requires applying engineering judgment to assess life‑safety, structural, and other code aspects, and it demands thorough knowledge of inspection and plan‑review protocols.

- Maintain effective relationships with government agencies, architects, contractors, engineers, and the public.
- Represent the department at internal and external meetings, demonstrating sound judgment.
- Stay current on legal and technical developments in building construction and codes.
- Function independently as an expert on specialized code, rules, and policy.
- Work under general direction of supervisor, with periodic review of work.

Work is performed primarily in a general office environment, with occasional walking, bending, and lifting up to 35 pounds. The position may require site visits, client office work, and extended periods of computer use in a fast‑paced setting with tight deadlines.
- Strong understanding of California Building Standards Codes and Referenced Standards.
- Knowledge of construction inspection and plan‑review protocols, policies, and procedures.
- Understand design discipline coordination, plan development, and write effective correction notices.
- Exhibit sound judgment interpreting code requirements.
- Pursue additional ICC certifications related to the position.
- 5–10 years experience reviewing plans for California Building Standards Codes compliance.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution.
- Current California PE license required.
- Knowledge of engineering principles applied to building design and construction.
- ICC Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing Plans Examiner Certification or related ICC/CASp certifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Bluebeam Studios, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.
- Ability to assume responsibility and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
- Ability to stay calm under stress, be flexible, and overcome obstacles.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
