The principal’s primary responsibility is to achieve growth and market capture through strong collaboration across architecture market sectors, client development leads, and business groups while building client relationships and identifying new opportunities. This senior leader will work strategically with the Federal Architecture Market Sector Director, Federal Architecture team, and Managing Principal to present the best teams and services to science clients and secure successful CPARS.
Project leadership duties include growing a balanced, multidisciplinary Federal Science team, assessing staffing capabilities, recruiting expertise, and maintaining a design‑driven practice. The role also requires collaboration with market and office leadership to implement growth initiatives, obtain new science projects, and contribute to office profitability. Additionally, the principal will manage client relationships, act as a key liaison on pursuits, and represent HDR as a thought leader in professional and community organizations.
Marketing and business development responsibilities involve serving as a seller‑doer for the federal science market in the DMV area, meeting net fee booking goals, and supporting business development activities. The principal will lead proposal analysis, draft responses, oversee qualification packages, and direct interview presentation strategies. Collaboration with regional leaders, marketing staff, and design professionals is essential to win work and expand HDR’s portfolio.
Preferred qualifications include experience or interest in sustainable design/LEED, PMP certification, and at least 15 years of A/E/C industry experience on large federal science projects. Candidates should possess knowledge of the local and regional federal market and the ability to collaborate and integrate with existing teams. U.S.‑born citizenship is required due to client contract stipulations.
Required qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, registration as an architect, and a minimum of 15 years of related experience, including at least 7 years of project management. Applicants must have led large‑scale projects, delivered client presentations, and demonstrated strong leadership, mentoring, and communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, willingness to travel, and commitment to HDR’s employee‑owned culture are also required.
