Are you ready to lead and deliver transport infrastructure projects that shape the future of New Zealand’s land transport system? This permanent opportunity is based in Wellington with the NZ Transport Agency (Waka Kotahi). The Principal Project Manager will join the Project Services Team to deliver great journeys for Aotearoa, overseeing projects from business case development through to implementation.
The role involves leading multidisciplinary project teams through planning, procurement, design and delivery phases, driving best practice and standardisation, mentoring project management capability, overseeing governance, financial monitoring and contract management, and collaborating with iwi partners, government agencies and industry bodies to achieve successful outcomes aligned with strategic objectives.
The ideal candidate brings at least ten years’ experience in project and programme management of large, complex infrastructure projects, including financial and risk management. Experience managing road transport or civil construction contracts (NZS3910, NZS3916, CCCS) and advanced procurement skills are required, together with strong analytical, problem‑solving and strategic thinking abilities. A background in transport design and construction, business case preparation and stakeholder engagement—including iwi and senior leaders—is essential, as is the ability to lead and mentor technical teams.
A civil engineering qualification or equivalent project management experience in the roading sector is expected, with professional membership or chartership desirable. Applicants must hold a current New Zealand driver’s licence and be willing to learn about Te Ao Māori, tikanga, Te Reo Māori and the Treaty of Waitangi. Salary is between $156,458 and $191,300, commensurate with skills and experience.
