Phlebotomist

Description

• Perform blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination.
• Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Accurately label and follow procedures as outlined by specific protocols to maintain the integrity of the specimen during transport.
• Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
• Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperature.

Requirements

• Experience with straight needles and infant blood draws is a plus.
• Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood drawing techniques.
• Strong administrative skills and attention to detail.
• 2-3 years of experience with drawing blood.
• Properly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner.
• Understanding of specimen processing and pediatric phlebotomy.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
