Key duties include pre‑ and post‑inspection of assigned railcars, compliance with OSHA and company safety protocols, maintaining a clean work area, and performing repairs such as basic mechanics, grinding, painting, and decaling. Technicians operate hand and power tools—including air‑arc, plasma cutters, and welding equipment—as well as equipment like forklifts, man‑lifts, and cranes after completing documented training. They also assist with disassembly of damaged railcars, inventory control, and interior cleaning.
Technicians use mechanical skills to inspect and repair railcars and tank cars to meet customer and industry specifications, following FRA and AAR interchange rules. Candidates must have a safety‑ and quality‑focused mindset and be comfortable working outdoors year‑round in various weather conditions.
Applicants need a high‑school diploma or GED; prior experience as a carman or railcar repair technician is preferred. Required skills include reading technical documents, basic math, mechanical knowledge, and the ability to use hand and power tools; an AWS E7018 welding certification is preferred. The role demands the ability to pass fitness‑for‑duty, physical, drug, and alcohol screenings and to perform physically demanding work in both indoor and outdoor environments, often in confined spaces and around moving equipment.
