  • Simulate: Model primary and secondary systems in power system simulation software platforms like CAPE or ASPEN.
  • Stay Ahead: Keep up to date with NERC and NPCC protection and control standards.
  • Calculate: Perform special short circuit studies and other complex calculations to establish relay settings using sophisticated software analysis programs.
  • Develop: Utilize communication systems including power line carrier, leased telephone circuits, microwave links, and fiber optic technology to develop protective relaying systems.
  • Analyze: Perform system disturbance analysis and recommend protective relaying system modifications and/or additions.
  • Collaborate: Interface with manufacturers, professional organizations, regulatory and standardizing bodies (e.g., NPCC, IEEE) to stay conversant with power system protection and control requirements.
  • Innovate: Engineer protective relay and control systems, calculate relay settings, create relay control logic, and analyze relay operations for transmission/distribution substations.
  • Monitor: Use state-of-the-art microprocessor-based digital transient recorders and integrated sequence-of-event recorders in complex monitoring and logging systems for system performance analysis.
  • Review: Ensure proper relay coordination margin by reviewing existing protective relay settings and recommending changes if required. Document and recommend protection system improvements.
  • Specify: Prepare specifications for purchasing protection, communication equipment, and instrument transformers, and evaluate bid proposals to provide technical recommendations.
