The Chief Engineer leads and administers the engineering team to safely operate data center machinery and systems while promptly addressing tenant and data center manager needs. This role also protects and enhances the owner’s asset value, ensuring equipment meets or exceeds its rated life.
Key duties include managing time records and overtime for operating engineers, conducting monthly facility inspections, preparing work orders, and reporting deficiencies with action plans. The engineer implements fire safety programs, coordinates drills, assists with tenant construction, reviews project specifications, enforces contractor conduct, and drives energy‑management practices while training staff. Vendor management, inventory control, competitive bidding for MEP contracts, and overseeing system testing and documentation are also critical responsibilities.
Supervisory responsibilities cover hiring, training, performance appraisal, rewarding, disciplining, and addressing employee concerns for lead operating engineers and operating engineers, in line with JLL policies and applicable laws.
- Process and submit accurate time records for operating engineers and manage overtime within budget.
- Conduct monthly inspections of data center facilities and equipment.
- Generate work orders and requisitions for repairs and equipment replacement.
- Report deficiencies and develop action plans to senior management.
- Implement fire, safety, and environmental hazard mitigation measures.
- Coordinate fire drills, emergency procedures, and fire protection programs.
- Assist facility manager with tenant construction and capital improvement projects.
- Review project specifications and blueprints to identify technical solutions.
- Enforce noise and conduct standards with contractors.
- Apply energy management practices to optimize data center operations and train staff.
- Collaborate with contractors and design engineers on automated systems and conservation programs.
- Ensure compliance with property accounting procedures, purchase orders, and competitive bidding.
- Perform and oversee testing of data center systems, document results, and recommend operational changes.
- Maintain accurate equipment logs, settings, and status records.
- Lead projects that enhance asset value and coordinate installations.
- Manage inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies; evaluate vendors and conduct quarterly quality meetings.
- Bid and manage MEP service contracts to ensure quality and cost‑effectiveness.
- Develop and revise emergency procedure manuals, contractor rules, and tenant design criteria.
- Supervise lead operating engineers and operating engineers, handling hiring, training, performance appraisal, and discipline.

Minimum qualifications include a high‑school diploma or GED, five to seven years of JLL engineering experience, three to five years of supervisory experience, and comprehensive knowledge of data‑center HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automation, and life‑safety systems. Preferred experience includes Corrigo, MCIM/Salesforce, Zendesk, and ServiceNow. Physical demands involve frequent walking, climbing, lifting 50 lb, and working at heights on varied schedules.
