The Field Technician position provides on-site services and technical assistance for all aspects of hazardous waste management. The role includes responding to customer telephone or electronic inquiries, assisting sales with inventory and classification of special waste, and recording and scheduling waste projects and shipments to various disposal facilities. It also supports invoicing questions, MSDS acquisition/review, safety paperwork, TDG documentation, and waste classification and labeling, serving as a critical point of contact that reflects GFL’s commitment to customer satisfaction and company values.
Key duties involve active participation in GFL’s Safety Program, immediate communication of safety concerns, attendance at safety meetings, and completion of daily toolboxes, FLHAs, and incident reports. The technician selects appropriate PPE, samples and tests waste to determine transport, packaging, and disposal requirements, ensures waste is classified and disposed of per regulatory bodies, and completes necessary manifest paperwork. Additional responsibilities include evaluating customer needs, supporting incident response, supervising project work, conducting field work in remote locations, executing chemical and petroleum transfers, and contributing to out‑of‑scope projects requiring extra planning.
Applicants should have post‑secondary education in environmental sciences, chemistry, or biology (preferred) and related field experience. They must be able to work in difficult weather conditions, flexible shifts, long hours, weekends, and travel away from home. Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations is an asset, and physical ability to lift up to 50 lb, work at heights or in confined spaces, and perform repetitive labor is required. Strong computer, organizational, problem‑solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, along with a self‑starter attitude and teamwork, are essential; certifications such as First Aid/CPR, H2S Alive, or Fall Protection are advantageous.
