Staff Accountant (Engineering Firm)

Description

• Assist with external audits and tax preparation as needed.
• Review project contracts and ensure compliance with billing terms.
• Monitor work-in-progress (WIP) schedules and provide variance analysis.
• Track project revenues, costs, labor hours, and budgets against forecasts.
• This is largely a sedentary role. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate project plans both orally and in writing.
• Support payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable as required.
• Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and adjustments.
• Set up and maintain project cost codes in the accounting system.
• Collaborate with project managers to resolve billing, reporting, and budget discrepancies.
• Support preparation of financial statements, budgets, and forecasts.
• Contribute to process improvements in accounting and project reporting.
• Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
• The employee is occasionally required to move about the office to operate office productivity machinery or maneuver through a construction site safely.
• Maintain compliance with GAAP and company policies.
• Prepare and process progress billings, time & expense invoices, and retainage releases.
• Reconcile general ledger accounts and bank statements.

Requirements

• Proficiency with accounting/project management software (Deltek Vision, Ajera, BST, or similar preferred).
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
• The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
• 1–3 years of accounting experience (experience in engineering, construction, or professional services preferred).
• Strong understanding of GAAP and project-based accounting principles.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with project teams.
• Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and organizational skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
• May require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
