As part of our multi-skilled Asset Needs Team, you'll lead on maintaining the Vehicle Restraint System (VRS) asset across the South East. From overseeing inspections to shaping renewal strategies, you'll play a key role in safeguarding millions of journeys every year.
Operations is at the heart of keeping the strategic road network moving and ensuring our customers get the best possible experience when using our roads.
We address over 39,000 customer enquiries every month, plan and deliver all maintenance activities on the network, drive efficiencies and improvements across our systems and roads, and respond to incidents across 4,500 miles of motorways and major A-roads that we manage. All to make sure National Highways customers have safer, smoother, and more reliable journeys.
You'll collaborate with project teams, supply chain partners, and stakeholders across the region - bringing your technical knowledge and leadership to ensure projects are delivered to the highest standards, aligned with our policies and strategies.
- Ensure the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
- Support technical reviews and approvals for preliminary and detailed design solutions.
- Conduct and lead development of early solutions for renewals and/or improvements, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, considering new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
- Support identification and management of asset studies and survey works, including prioritisation of needs to ensure assets remain in serviceable condition and meet the requirements of our standards.

This role can be based at either our Maidstone or Basingstoke offices on a hybrid working basis. The role may also require working during unsociable hours.
Please note that you will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have no more than 3 points to be considered for this position and during employment.
- Social media and adverse journalism check
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and a member of a relevant professional Body (or working towards) with appropriate experience.
- Driving licence check (if applicable)
- DBS criminal record check
- Good knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and their application on the highway network; including use of the Road Restraint Risk Assessment Procedure (RRRAP).
- Fit to work questionnaire (for all), followed by a medical check (if applicable)
- 3 year employment history references
- Understanding of VRS (Vehicle Restraint Systems) design and systems.
- Qualifications and/or professional membership check (if applicable)
- Experience in highway infrastructure design, construction and delivery methods.
- Good knowledge of CDM 2015.
