Professional Engineer – Field Services Department

Description

Strengthen the Field Services department by supervising production staff, creating a robust review and oversight process, ensuring standardized procedures across offices, and elevating the quality of inspections, reports, and client interactions.

This role includes reviewing and sealing field reports prepared by production staff and by the PE, ensuring technical accuracy, consistency, and compliance with applicable codes and professional standards.

• Track trends, implement corrective actions, and improve report quality and turnaround times.
• Ensure deliverables align with applicable codes, standards, and client scope.
• Provide direct leadership, coaching, and performance management for field services production staff.
• Represent the department with professionalism and urgency.
• Technology: Review current tools, document recommendations, and oversee implementation.
• Recommend improvements or replacements and oversee implementation, training, and adoption.
• May assist with field verification and coordination tied to structural plans where applicable to project scope and licensure requirements.
• Conduct periodic audits of field activities and documentation to ensure adherence to SOPs and industry standards.
• Evaluate current field data collection and reporting tools.
• Review protocols: Establish a systematic review process for field reports, inspections, and testing documentation across all offices.
• Lead the creation and rollout of standardized field service procedures across offices, including:
• Provide clear technical direction when deficiencies, risks, or nonconforming conditions are identified.
• Support team development through training plans, technical feedback, and clear expectations.
• Drive adoption and provide training to ensure consistent field execution.
• Review, approve, and seal field reports, inspection documentation, and testing records prepared by production staff and by the PE, consistent with state board rules and internal quality standards.
• Within 3 months: Assume direct supervisory authority over field services production staff, ensuring accountability and professional development.
• Quality assurance: Implement periodic audits to ensure SOP and industry standard adherence.
• Collaborate with structural, architectural, or other engineering teams to connect field findings to design intent and risk mitigation.
• Build a culture of accountability, safety, and continuous improvement.
• By month 6: Lead creation of standardized field service procedures to ensure consistency and compliance.

This role is designed to evolve into a Branch Department Manager position, with potential progression to a Regional Department Manager overseeing multiple offices.

We are seeking a Field Services Professional Engineer (PE) to strengthen and elevate our Field Services department. This leader will supervise production staff, build a robust review and oversight process, and drive standardized procedures across offices. The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, a commitment to safety and quality, and the ability to mentor teams while serving as a trusted client partner.

• Ability to occasionally lift or carry equipment up to 50lbs.
• Working knowledge of relevant codes, standards, and safety requirements.
• 5+ years of experience in field services, inspections, CMT, structural assessments, or related engineering services.
• Familiarity with modern field data collection platforms and report automation workflows.
• Strong written communication with the ability to produce and/or oversee clear, defensible, client-ready reports.
• Background in structural engineering support, field verification, and condition assessment.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Client engagement: Own end-to-end client experience for field service projects.
• Experience developing SOPs, checklists, or standardized reporting frameworks.
• Experience with CMT/Special Inspections
• Prior people leadership experience or strong readiness to step into a formal supervisory role.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in NC or ability to obtain through reciprocity within a reasonable timeframe.
• Ability to visit active job sites and safely navigate uneven terrain, ladders, or confined areas as required by project scope.
• Demonstrated experience reviewing technical deliverables and implementing quality controls.
