Principal Engineer, Hardware Development

Description

• Identify technical areas for improvement and make detailed business cases for improvements or new areas of opportunities.
• Serve as the technical lead for larger projects, establishing technical direction as well as monitoring project management metrics.
• Direct contribution in the hiring process through technical & team fit interviews.
• Lead in innovative technology and solutions development and/or validation
• Represents Company in a positive, professional manner when working with both internal and external customers.
• Provide detailed & accurate estimates for development efforts.
• Work on agile development teams, collaborating with multiple cross-discipline architecture teams to develop hardware and software components as part of L+G Smart Grid solutions.
• Develop specifications including functional requirements, detailed design, test procedures as part of multidisciplinary team.
• Provide leadership in design, development, documentation, bench/compliance testing, etc.
• Lead design, and development of wireless communication devices
• Contribute to the overall system architecture that utilize communication devices by working with Systems and Solutions architecture teams.
• Lead in component and/or solution design, development, documentation, and validation.
• Acts as technical authority in areas of specialty on assigned projects.
• Provide support, troubleshoot, and resolve sustaining issues with high Quality Output.
• Participate in recruitment, development and mentoring of junior engineers.
• Conduct reviews with the team (subordinates) to improve compliance with established best practices and applicable industry standards.
• Supports and adheres to Company’s Code of Conduct and Ethics Policy.
• Lead functional area-specific continuous improvement initiatives.
• Work with the other architects in the wireless communications platform team, and Global Procurement, on the selection of major components used in RF devices
• Responsible for subordinate teams' on-time delivery & quality adherence.
• Direct contribution to the performance appraisal process, feeding into performance improvement plans & employee recognition plans.

Requirements

• Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering or related field. Master's degree preferred.
• Ability to proficiently utilize standard computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processors, basic CAD tools, web browsers, email, and Windows.
• Experience in product development and manufacturing processes
• Use of oscilloscopes, and various other testing equipment
• Deep knowledge with relevant development and/or validation methodologies
• Deep knowledge of AMI and Smart Grid Systems and Solutions
• Ability to provide technical guidance to project teams
• Ability to work effectively with external partners.
• Ability to energize and mentor junior members of the team to achieve deliverables.
• Ability to exercise critical thinking and creative problem solving.
• Knowledge in modern Communications technologies RF Mesh (Wi-SUN), Cellular (LTE M, NB-IoT), Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth/BLE
• Technical writing abilities
• Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing.
• Ability to provide technical leadership on complex projects.
• Ability to recognize potential problems and take proactive measures.
• Ability to learn independently and facilitate training and knowledge sharing across multiple teams.
• Knowledge of development processes, tools, and related frameworks
• Expert level RF and Antenna Design experience
• Electrical Engineering and metering industry knowledge
• Ability to communicate effectively across audiences and through multiple mediums.
• Proficient use of lab equipment, o-scopes, logic analyzers, signal generators, DVMs
• Experience with analog circuit design, specification development, electronics packaging, and environmental qualification testing.
• Excellent listening skills and ability to understand information and ideas presented through spoken words including technical data.
• Ability to own parts of projects and facilitate project execution.
• Ability to work independently as well as in a leadership role on multiple development teams.
• Ability to work independently or in a team.
• Ability to work with others of diverse backgrounds.
• Experience with power/AC electronics such as transformers, regulators, switching supplies, filtering.
• Advanced design, development, or validation skills In functional area
• High voltage design experience highly desirable
• Experience with embedded software is highly desirable.

• Ability to stay current on changing technologies and their applications in the utility industry.
• Computer skills such as C, C++, LabVIEW, Assembly Programming, debugging, scripting programming languages, various software packages such as revision control and issue tracking and Microsoft Office familiarity.
• Excellent relationship-building skills
• Must have proficient multitasking, organizational and time management skills
• Ability to understand and utilize component datasheets effectively.
• Experience with low noise analog design, PCB design considerations for grounding, transient protection, noise immunity, and signal conditioning.
• Acute vision to see details at close range.
• At least 10 years of relevant experience required.
