The Project Engineer assists Project Managers to ensure that work installed on the project meets plan and specification requirements.
The engineer ensures compliance by thoroughly understanding project plans and specifications, reviewing shop drawings and submittals, and analyzing plans for value and constructability. They communicate any inconsistencies to the architect and recommend labor‑saving or cost‑saving methods to benefit Layton and the owner.
They attend and document project team meetings, distribute minutes, and publish weekly progress reports while updating project schedules as needed. The engineer assists in bidding, develops scopes of work for trade contractors, and works with the superintendent to establish schedule milestones, review and approve shop drawings, samples, and material lists.
Additional duties include maintaining logs of shop drawing status, change requests, and proposals; advising on concrete pour procedures and inspecting structural reinforcement; coordinating slump and compaction testing; reviewing field installation of structural elements; sampling work to analyze methods and recommend efficiency improvements; and complying with all safety policies and reporting unsafe conditions.
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required, along with strong written and oral communication skills, proficiency in Word and Excel, and the ability to read and understand blueprints. Candidates should demonstrate flexibility, teamwork, integrity, problem‑solving ability, and a willingness to quickly learn new information, with one year of field experience preferred and scheduling software knowledge advantageous.
