Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to customers. The department handles all aspects of PG&E’s gas distribution and transmission, including planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response.
Key responsibilities include installing, adjusting, testing, operating, maintaining, and repairing telecommunication equipment as an assistant to a Gas Transmission Technician, and writing and holding pipeline and station clearances. The employee also works on mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic gas measurement and control systems, and participates in DOT‑operations, maintenance, and emergency activities.
The role is an IBEW Local 1245 journeyman classification, represented by a collective bargaining agreement. The employee works without direct supervision on the installation, adjustment, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic gas measurement, instrumentation, and control systems, and must be capable of working at elevated heights. In a lead capacity, the employee may supervise lower‑classification workers.
Hiring may require Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) review, and provisional hires must complete targeted training to achieve journey‑level knowledge. The position is DOT‑covered and subject to random drug and alcohol screening. Based in Oakland (subject to change), the starting wage is $69.14 per hour, subject to collective bargaining and local factors.
Minimum qualifications are: at least 18 years of age, a high school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience), experience as a Measurement and Control Mechanic, ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and overtime, ability to wear PPE and work at heights, completion of the provisional training plan, passing random drug/alcohol tests, and holding a valid Class C California driver’s license.
Desired qualifications include five years of hands‑on instrumentation experience, three years of electronics measurement and control experience, and experience with CNG/LNG facilities. Additional preferred experience covers industrial HVAC systems, oil and gas facility work, formal education in industrial instrumentation, basic computer skills, knowledge of gas regulation and data communication, basic math (including Ohm’s Law), and electrical power systems. Applicants residing within 60 miles of the Oakland headquarters receive additional consideration.
Candidates must qualify on all prerequisite tests before applying and on secondary tests before interviewing. The pre‑employment testing program includes a physical test battery, industrial skills test, work orientation inventory (physical/technical driving), and a Gas Control Technician test.
