The Principal Cable System Design Engineer role is a senior position within AECOM's Transmission & Distribution team, focusing on high‑voltage cable system design and delivery. The engineer will support a diverse client base that includes transmission system operators, distribution network operators, private developers, and international energy majors. This role involves shaping technical standards, driving innovation, and guiding digital delivery in the cable engineering field.
- Lead delivery of large‑scale HV/EHV cable projects from concept through completion, ensuring quality, safety, and innovation.
- Develop and oversee HV cable designs, including routing, burial risk assessments, and thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical modelling.
- Provide expert input on cable ratings, installation methods, jointing, cleating design, and system integration in challenging environments.
- Validate complex calculations (ampacity, short‑circuit forces, EMC, induced voltages, thermomechanical forces) to meet National Grid, IEC, and CIGRÉ standards.
- Engage clients and stakeholders to deliver technical assurance, strategic direction, and value‑engineered solutions for high‑profile programmes.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary inputs (civil, structural, OHL, substation, marine) to ensure integrated design solutions.
- Manage project execution, technical risks, interfaces, and quality reviews while supporting procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Conduct third‑party inspections, FAT/SAT witnessing, and vendor oversight for cable and ancillary equipment.
