The Assistant Chief Engineer is accountable for the efficient operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems within the assigned facility. In many locations the role serves as the sole on‑site engineer and may also supervise maintenance personnel, depending on the building’s size and complexity.
- Supervise hiring, training, performance management, and disciplinary actions for engineering and maintenance staff.
- Lead annual C&W Safety Program scheduling and execution in coordination with Asset Services and EH&S.
- Ensure 100 % site compliance with codes, regulations, and company directives.
- Manage building operational accounts, produce variance reports, and assist in operating and capital budget development.
- Track utility usage, perform cost analysis, and implement sub‑metering and budgeting models.
- Conduct regular inspections of building systems, identify issues, and recommend corrective actions.
- Design and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance schedules based on manufacturer recommendations and industry best practices.
- Create and update building‑specific maintenance and safety manuals, and maintain an Operations Document Library with plans, schematics, and warranties.
- Deliver system and equipment training for building staff and tenants.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with external contractors, tenant finish personnel, and engineering teams.
- Oversee fire/life safety, plumbing, HVAC, and electrical systems, staying current with HVAC technology trends.
- Respond swiftly to emergencies such as fires, evacuations, equipment failures, and customer concerns.
- Administer inventory control, procure parts and supplies, and maintain adequate stock levels.
- Participate in shift work, on‑call, or standby duties as the sole maintenance staff member when required.

- Minimum 5+ years of experience in commercial property engineering or a related field.
- Vocational/technical training certificate and appropriate trade licenses (e.g., Journeyman or Master Electrician).
- Financial knowledge for reading budgets, variance reporting, and basic financial analysis.
- Familiarity with Energy Management Systems (EMS), programming, and fire alarm systems.
- Proficiency in Outlook, Excel, and Word.
