From day one, you’ll gain insight into how electricity and fuel markets move and how Genesis responds to capture opportunities and manage risk. As your capability grows, you’ll take on rostered shifts as a spot trader, making live trading decisions that keeps our portfolio optimised and has a direct impact on Genesis’ financial performance.

Alongside your trading development, you’ll contribute analytical horsepower to the team - from market analysis and reporting to modelling, optimisation, and performance tracking. Your work will help shape trading strategies, improve systems, and deliver insights that drive value across the business.

Step into the heart of New Zealand’s energy markets and learn how trading decisions shape our generation portfolio in real time. Reporting to the Spot Trading Manager, you’ll be trained and supported by experienced traders as you build the skills and confidence to operate on the spot trading desk.

You’ll bring a solid academic foundation, a passion for energy or financial markets, and a willingness to learn from some of the best in the industry.

This is a full-time permanent role based in Auckland or Hamilton, involving a rotating 12-hour roster (2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off) once trained, alongside standard business-hour analytical work.

  • Experience in trading, market operations, or energy analytics
  • Familiarity with the New Zealand electricity market and its regulatory frameworks
  • Great communication and collaboration skills.
  • Degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with Python, SQL, and/or Power BI is a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with great attention to detail
