ITS Traffic Engineer

Description

• Lead development of ITS/ATMS and traffic signal design plans.
• Perform traffic engineering and manage diverse ITS/ATMS projects.
• Prepare technical specifications, construction cost estimates, and power design analysis reports.
• Develop electrical one‑line diagrams and conduct voltage drop, arc‑flash, and short‑circuit analyses.
• Create communication diagrams and fiber/copper splicing plans.
• Produce systems engineering documents such as Concept of Operations, Systems Engineering Management Plans, and Requirements Traceability Verification Matrix.
• Conduct field data collection and site investigations.
• Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
• Support business development and marketing initiatives.
• Mentor and manage junior staff to ensure successful project delivery.

Requirements

VHB is seeking a skilled and forward‑thinking Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Traffic Engineer to join its Transportation Systems Group in the Southeast region, with hybrid opportunities in Orlando or Tampa, FL. In this role you will contribute to planning, documentation, design, and construction support of advanced ITS infrastructure and traffic design. VHB offers a hybrid work model that lets employees thrive both in the office and remotely.

• 8+ years of ITS design or system development experience, including traffic signal, communication, and network architecture.
• Proficient with Excel data analysis and design platforms (OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, AutoCAD).
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver high‑quality work on time.
• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Systems, or Electrical Engineering (Transportation focus preferred); Master’s may substitute 2 years experience.
• 8‑11+ years ITS engineering experience; Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required.
• Familiarity with state DOT processes and standards preferred.
