The Damage Prevention Specialist II develops partnerships and delivers effective programs to prevent damage to company-owned facilities. Serving as the subject‑matter expert within an assigned geography, the specialist ensures public and employee safety while maintaining continuity of service for customers.
Key duties include conducting frequent in‑person site visits, phone calls, texts, and emails for high‑risk 811 tickets, evaluating one‑call legislation compliance, issuing stop‑work orders when needed, and attending pre‑construction meetings to protect facilities. The role also involves delivering educational outreach to municipalities, excavators, locators, and the general public regarding safe‑digging laws and procedures.
The specialist assesses daily high‑risk ticket volume, prioritizes short‑term site visits, and drives medium‑term initiatives aligned with NiSource and state damage‑prevention plans. Responsibilities include building relationships, organizing outreach events, auditing locates for compliance, providing coaching, and coordinating training sessions with internal and external partners.
Required qualifications include a high school diploma, 1‑3 years of utility operations or damage‑prevention experience, strong presentation and public‑speaking skills, knowledge of gas/electric standards and safe‑digging laws, and proficiency with Microsoft Office. Preferred qualifications are an associate’s degree and experience on special projects, with a willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
