The Operating Engineer role serves as the technical backbone of facility operations, overseeing critical building systems across multiple engineering disciplines such as BAS, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and central utility plants. This position blends hands‑on technical work with project management to support JLL's commitment to operational excellence and client satisfaction.
Daily responsibilities include operating and maintaining equipment for HVAC, mechanical, plumbing, structural, fire, and life‑safety systems, as well as performing preventative and reactive maintenance. The engineer manages small operational projects, documents work in CMMS tools (WebTMA and Oracle), conducts inspections and calibrations, reviews maintenance purchases, and monitors vendor performance. Additionally, they implement safety protocols, sustainability practices, and energy‑saving initiatives while analyzing service request data to address recurring issues.
Required qualifications consist of a high school diploma or GED with proven technical aptitude, familiarity with CMMS, BMS, Microsoft Word, and Excel, and the physical ability to lift 50 pounds and work in various positions for extended periods. Candidates must demonstrate strong problem‑solving skills, independent troubleshooting capability, and excellent communication for collaborating with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
Preferred qualifications include completion of a union‑sponsored trainee program or relevant certification, experience with Building Automation Systems and central utility plant operations, a background in HVAC maintenance and optimization, knowledge of hazardous material handling, vendor management, and sustainability practices. Understanding of preventative maintenance scheduling and execution is also valued.
The position is based on‑site in Chicago, IL, working the morning shift with an estimated hourly rate of $54.52 (approximately $112,840 annually).
