The role coordinates and expedites the flow of materials from suppliers and within departments according to production schedules, while also planning and scheduling material and production needs. It is responsible for departmental operations planning and execution within a technical discipline, operating with some autonomy but guided by established policies and end‑result reviews. The position may modify procedures as long as quality, volume, and timeliness standards are met.
Key responsibilities include managing master planning, material processes, and systems, preparing and updating production schedules and purchasing needs, and ensuring operational alignment with production plans and KPIs. The role optimizes inventory, places purchase orders, and manages on‑time delivery by collaborating with suppliers. Cross‑functional collaboration supports internal quality, engineering, accounts payable, and strategic sourcing teams, and includes direct people management such as staffing and performance development.
The incumbent uses in‑depth technical knowledge, analytical thinking, and awareness of best practices and market competition to execute policy and strategy. Judgment is applied to propose solutions for complex manufacturing processes, and the individual serves as a resource for less‑experienced colleagues, potentially leading small low‑risk projects. Communication of performance expectations and handling of sensitive issues are also part of the role.
Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma/GED with at least six years of relevant experience) and three to five years of experience in sourcing, material planning, or the related job family/function.
