The ideal candidate will lead architectural engineering repair design teams on technically complex projects across a diverse set of building types, including multi-family, office, retail, industrial, hospitality, higher education, and governmental facilities. Projects may include rehabilitation of the building envelope, and structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire life safety systems. Many of these projects are a result of building forensic investigations the firm has carried out. Marx Okubo does not design ground up new construction.
You will work collaboratively with the discipline lead(s), subconsultants, and where applicable the construction project manager assigned to the project, is accountable for project financial performance, schedule adherence, and team communication. You will manage multiple projects during all phases of a project until completion/ close out. You will direct team members and consultants in adherence with the project approach, will implement the appropriate solution, will ensure the team designs and documents the project, will comply with the appropriate code requirements, and will ensure that the work is completed as planned, budgeted, scheduled and in conformance with the design intent.
- Move through construction and existing building sites over rough terrain
- Initiate and maintain contact with internal team members, consultants, and Client for clarification, coordination and negotiation of critical issues
- Travel to sites as needed, locally and regionally (25-50%)
- Ensure the team approaches the project from a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to minimize risk and scope gaps and to ensure the right solution is implemented
- Serve as the Architect of Record for all project related documentation which has been prepared under your supervision and direction
- Consult with client to determine function and spatial requirements and prepares information regarding design, specifications, materials, color, equipment, estimated costs, and construction time
- See and respond to dangerous situations
- Responsible for achieving the client's project goals including budget and schedule
- Prepare schedules, budgets and work plans during all phases of the project
- Work in outdoor weather conditions or unconditioned areas
- Participate in client presentations, marketing, and business development opportunities
- Provide leadership, including professional development coaching and mentoring of staff, and works closely with Technical Directors to train and improve team member skills
- Ascend and descend ladders and stairs
- Lead, develop, and execute project documentation and contract administration across all phases of assigned projects

We are currently accepting applications for a Licensed Project Architect /Project Manager at a Senior Associate level to join our team in San Francisco.
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, masters degree preferred
- Proven effectiveness coordinating with Owners and contractors
- PMP, and LEED or other sustainability accreditation is preferred
- Design experience specifically for building repair as an architect of record on technically complex commercial projects
- Has good technical knowledge with commensurate architecture detailing skills
- Travel approximately 25-50% of the time both in and out of state
- Ability to think outside the box to help develop solutions that are effective, budget appropriate and buildable
- Move safely through confined spaces and narrow paths
- Detail oriented and organized with proven experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Proven leadership skills in leading and organizing a team of multiple disciplines and consultants on successful projects
- Analytical thinker with strong problem-solving skills
- Experience with the California DSA process for education projects and HCAI process (formerly OSHPD) for Healthcare is preferred
- Operate a computer and other related office equipment, and possess visual acuity to read information from printed sources and computer screens
- Lift up to 40 pounds (ex: ladders)
- Confident with public speaking and networking
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (outlook, word, excel, PowerPoint), AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, PlanGrid, and Box; experience with Primavera or Quire is a plus
- Excellent writing skills
- 10 - 15 years’ architectural practice with prior project management experience across complex projects and all phases through post-occupancy
- Experience with project sizes of all types
- Licensed professional architect within the State of California, NCARB registration preferred
- Respond quickly to sounds

This role is on a hybrid schedule with Monday and Tuesday in the office each week with site visits and work from home for the remainder of the week.
