OSP Field Engineer

Description

The OSP Field Engineer provides training and supportive engineering services by collecting detailed telecommunications data on‑site. The role validates existing field designs for aerial, buried, and underground fiber networks, including conduits, handholes, building entrances, and riser facilities. From time to time, the engineer may act as an informal lead for junior staff.

• Document OSP facilities (cables, poles, terminals, pedestals, handholes) with photos.
• Measure attachment heights, span distances, utility structures, and distances to centerlines, property lines, and curb lines.
• Identify power and communication equipment and ownership on utility poles.
• Record bonding, grounding, guying, and anchor details.
• Deliver field notes and photographs to the engineering team.
• Identify fiber placement obstructions and propose mitigation strategies.
• Interpret digital GIS maps, conduit records, and layout drawings.
• Use field tools such as measuring wheels, height sticks, pull finder, GPS devices, MH/HH hooks, and laser rangefinder.
• Operate electronic devices (iPad, iPhone, laptop) for data sharing and communication.
• Walk up to 3 mi per day on gravel, pavement, grass, or similar terrain.
• Follow OSHA, state, and local safety standards.

Requirements

• Apply knowledge of OSP construction techniques.
• Minimum 3 years experience in fiber‑optic/telecommunications construction.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Knowledge of outside plant activities (fiber cable design, pole line construction, conduit system design) and make‑ready issues.
• Experience obtaining right‑of‑way easements and annotating field notes for desktop teams.
• Ability to read as‑built prints, identify conflicts, and select routing for projects.
• Familiarity with GIS, ESRI, and shapefile functionality.
• Capability to identify utility types and regulatory violations (RUS, NESC, GO95, NEC).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; working knowledge of AutoCAD a plus.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, acceptable driving record, and ability to pass drug screen and background check.
• Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Frequently lift and move up to 50 lb.
• Travel extensively, working on site across multiple states with up to 100 % travel and overnight stays up to two weeks.
• Work outdoors roughly 95 % of the time in all weather conditions.
