Assists journeyman level pipefitters in laying out, fabricating, assembling, installing and maintaining piping systems, pipe supports, fixtures, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling and production and processing systems. The role involves a variety of tasks related to pipe installation and maintenance across multiple systems.
- Select type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to job specifications.
- Inspect worksite to determine presence of obstructions.
- Plan installation sequence to avoid obstructions and other workers' activities.
- Cut pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
- Thread pipe using threading machine.
- Bend pipe by hand or with pipe‑bending tools and machine.
- Mount pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe.
- Assemble and install metal or non‑metal pipes and fittings using threaded, caulked, soldered, brazed, fused, or cemented joints and hand tools.
- Secure pipes to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers using hand and power tools.
- Install and maintain refrigeration and air‑conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meters, pneumatic and hydraulic controls and piping.
- Test piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure and observing gauges.
- Weld pipe supports to structural steel members.
- Observe production machines to detect malfunctions and operate machinery to verify repairs.
- Load, transport and unload material, tools, equipment and supplies.
- Assist in lifting, positioning and securing material and work pieces during installation.
- Perform minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
- Use respiratory protection as required.
- Observe and comply with all safety and project rules.
- Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
- Apply shop mathematics to solve problems.
- Plan work and select proper tools.
- Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
- Compare and see differences in size, shape and form of lines, figures and objects.

Candidates may require a high school diploma or equivalent with 0–2 years of experience and work under immediate supervision, typically reporting to a foreman or other direct supervisor. Primary functions do not require independent judgment and involve following instructions to complete tasks in a timely, safe and efficient manner.
The position demands standing (60%), walking (20%) and sitting (20%) with the ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lb and 70 ft‑lb respectively. Workers must frequently climb, balance, and constantly reach, handle, and finger tools, while occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling may be required.
