Lead Caretaker

Manage school facilities, safety, staff, contractors, and budgets on site.
Overseeing the operation and maintenance of site systems (heating, cooling, lighting, security) and ensuring proactive/reactive works are managed within KPIs.
Ensuring the health, safety, and security of the school buildings and site, including regular security checks, risk assessments, and fire safety management.
Responsible for ensuring H&S standards are achieved across the contract.
Ensuring all site folders, notice boards, and records (e.g., staff sickness/absence) are up to date and reporting to the Facilities Manager as needed.
This role will also support both local and business zero carbon programmes, working towards zero carbon in a strategic and lean manner as and where it is appropriate.
Supporting the overall smooth running of the school, including maintenance and cleaning tasks as required, and undertaking any reasonable management requests.
Supporting the Facilities Manager with budget management, purchasing premises-related equipment and supplies, and managing the letting function for out-of-hours activities.
Supervising Caretaking and Cleaning staff, including recruitment, induction, development, and training, and liaising with the Cleaning Supervisor for ongoing training needs.
Managing and monitoring health and safety checks (e.g., fire alarms, legionella testing), reporting incidents, and conducting investigations as required.
Overseeing contractors and agency staff, ensuring compliance with Amey’s Zero Code Policies & Procedures, and that all required documentation (DBS, induction, etc.) is up to date.
Acting as the first point of contact for the school, maintaining professional communication, monitoring the email inbox, and conducting weekly meetings with the school’s main representative.
Attending relevant meetings (prestart, service review, lifecycle/project updates) and following escalation processes for emergencies.
