A & D Layout Technician

Description

The Design Engineer will create and draft sprinkler designs in accordance with current NFPA standards, collaborating closely with Designers, the Operations Manager, and Project Managers. The role supports company objectives and personal performance goals while maintaining professional customer service.

The position requires compliance with all safety practices, coordination with other departments, and may involve leading project teams, delivering status reports, and performing additional duties as assigned.

• Prepare fire alarm and sprinkler drawings per latest NFPA standards.
• Identify building construction type, hazard classification, and required protection.
• Plan and complete project requirements within set timelines.
• Coordinate with other trades, resolve coordination issues, and develop clash reports using Navisworks.
• Conduct field surveys to obtain accurate dimensions and information.
• Select materials, cut pipe, and produce calculations, material pick‑offs, and submittals.
• Complete project paperwork such as test papers, insurance permits, and punch lists.
• Communicate project status to Operations Manager and provide regular reports.
• Mentor Design Trainees and may serve as project leader directing team members.
• Ensure compliance with fire codes, company safety practices, and quality standards.

Requirements

Physical demands include regular sitting, walking, and occasional lifting of up to 20 lb, with the need to use computer‑aided design tools and basic office equipment.

• High School Diploma or GED; 3+ years fire alarm/sprinkler design experience required.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD (and Hydratec CAD) and strong mechanical aptitude.
• Significant Microsoft Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
• NICET certification preferred.
• Ability to think strategically, make sound decisions, and deliver accurate results.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
• Ability to prioritize in a fast‑paced, multi‑task environment and work with minimal supervision.
