Student Project Engineer

Description

• Support the Superintendent and Project Engineer in updating and maintaining the project schedule.
• Document changes in work and conditions, reporting them to the Superintendent, Project Manager, and Corporate Office.
• Enter time and equipment data into Heavy Job software daily; track quantities and communicate costs and amounts to the Superintendent.
• Keep detailed records, including job diaries, photos, and video logs.
• Coordinate and collaborate with the grade checker for quantity calculations.
• Draft correspondence related to project routes as needed.
• Travel to remote work locations for extended periods (up to 80% of the time).
• Assist with project health, safety, and environmental compliance.
• Collect and review timecards and equipment usage reports.
• Assist the Superintendent with the preparation of daily project reports.
• Communicate with grade checkers to ensure accurate quantity measurements.
• Maintain an organized and efficient field office.
• Review and calculate quantities upon receipt of pay estimates.
• Oversee and implement the site Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).

Requirements

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner.
• Ability to observe safety and security procedures, determine appropriate action beyond guidelines, report potentially unsafe conditions, and use equipment and materials properly.
• Ability to work well in group problem solving situations.
• Ability to identify and resolve problems promptly.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Basic knowledge of the construction industry and willingness to learn heavy civil construction trade.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Type 45 words per minute and should have adequate knowledge of database software, spreadsheet software, and word processing software.
• Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to approach others tactfully; react well under pressure.
• Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage competing demands, change approaches or methods to fit the situation best, and deal with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
• Good working knowledge of various personal computer business software applications presently used by the Company and ability to learn new applications.
• Ability to follow instructions and respond to management direction.
• Experience in the construction industry is preferred; heavy civil construction is strongly preferred.
• Ability to work with a high level of accuracy and thoroughness; ability to look for ways to improve and promote quality; ability to apply feedback to improve performance; ability to monitor own work to ensure quality.
• Ability to communicate utilizing both verbal and written methods.
• Ability to pass a drug, driving, and background screening.
• Completion of 2- or 3-years of postsecondary education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Surveying, Environmental Engineering, or related course studies required.
• Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Lead (CESCL) Certification preferred.
• Valid state Driver’s License and must be qualified to operate a vehicle under the conditions of Company’s Driving Policy.
• Ability to set and achieve challenging goals; demonstrate persistence and overcome obstacles.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently.
• Ability to focus on solving conflict and maintain confidentiality.
