The engineer will own the certification strategy, translate regulatory requirements into executable test programs, and design complex test setups that satisfy OEMs, authorities having jurisdiction, and certification bodies. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, technically rigorous, and able to explain the purpose behind standards such as Annex 9, not just how to pass them.
- Lead global certification and homologation programs for battery cells, modules, packs, and ESS across North America, EU, and other markets.
- Interpret and apply regulatory frameworks (UN, IEC, UL, SAE, ISO, regional) to client programs.
- Serve as technical authority during certification reviews, CB scheme evaluations, AHJ discussions, and customer audits.
- Develop and execute certification‑driven test plans covering electrical, mechanical, environmental, thermal, and abuse conditions.
- Design and oversee custom test setups for thermal runaway, mechanical abuse, electrical abuse, fire exposure, venting, and gas characterization.
- Translate ambiguous or evolving standards into clear, defensible test methodologies.
- Act as subject‑matter expert on battery and ESS standards such as UN 38.3, IEC 62281, UL 1642, SAE J2464, etc.
- Support internal scope expansion (e.g., A2LA, CB Scheme) with technical justification and method development.
- Analyze test data focusing on compliance, failure modes, margins, and risk; author certification reports and deviation justifications.
- Interface with OEMs, Tier‑1 suppliers, certification bodies, and regulators as senior technical liaison.
- Champion safe operation of high‑energy test environments, including abuse testing, fire mitigation, gas handling, and emergency response planning.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of lab infrastructure, procedures, and hazard analyses.

- Hold a Bachelor’s (Master’s preferred) degree in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Possess 7+ years of battery or ESS testing, certification, or homologation experience.
- Demonstrated ability to navigate standards‑driven testing for lithium‑ion systems and design complex test setups.
- Strong technical writing skills capable of withstanding auditor review.
- Preferred: direct ESS certification experience, familiarity with UL/IEC/UN/SAE pathways, global market access support, and comfort operating in gray‑area standards.
