Directing lifting operations: Use standard hand signals, batons, or two-way radios to communicate instructions to the crane operator and guide the lifting, moving, and positioning of loads.
Planning lifts: Collaborate with the rest of the lifting team, including the crane supervisor and appointed person, to ensure that lifts are planned and executed according to the lift plan and method statement.
Inspecting lifting equipment: Conduct pre-use checks on all lifting accessories and report any defects immediately. They must also perform post-operational checks to ensure no damage has occurred.
Monitoring and stopping lifts: Continuously monitor the load during movement and have the authority to halt the operation if conditions become unsafe, such as due to high winds or other hazards.
Assessing site conditions: Identify potential hazards in the area, such as overhead power lines, nearby structures, or unstable ground, and ensure the path of the lift is clear of personnel and obstacles.
Controlling the landing: Oversee the landing of loads at their destination, ensuring the area is prepared and clear before signaling for the load to be placed.
Preparing and securing loads: Attach and detach lifting accessories, such as chains and slings, to loads. They must ensure the load is properly secured, balanced, and ready for lifting.
