GFL Environmental operates a hazardous and non‑hazardous waste processing facility in Prince George, BC. The Operations Supervisor plays a key leadership role in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant facility operations. This position is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day activities, optimizing processes, coordinating resources, and supporting a high‑performing operations team. The role is critical in maintaining safety, environmental compliance, and operational excellence across the site.
The supervisor promotes and models GFL’s safety culture by leading through action and enforcing all safety policies and procedures. He/she participates in developing, revising, and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Task Hazard Analyses (THAs). Workplace hazards are identified, assessed, and mitigated, while staff are ensured to use proper tools, equipment, and PPE safely and effectively. Daily facility operations are overseen to meet efficient throughput and production targets, and operational performance is monitored to adjust workflows and identify improvement opportunities.
Collaboration with the Technical Manager is essential for troubleshooting difficult waste streams and supporting new treatment processes. Waste receipt tickets are reviewed for accuracy and inbound/outbound waste inventory levels are managed. Operational compliance with environmental, municipal, and facility regulations is ensured, and audits, inspections, and reporting are supported as required.
Supervision of operations staff includes coaching, training, and conducting performance evaluations, fostering a positive, safety‑focused team environment. Equipment reliability is overseen through maintenance scheduling and mechanical system troubleshooting, ensuring safe, proper, and efficient operation. Other duties are performed as required.
A high school diploma is required; post‑secondary education in operations management, engineering, or a mechanical trade is preferred. Proven experience in a production or operations leadership role and a valid Class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract are required; Class 1 or 3 licences are an asset. Candidates need strong mechanical aptitude, solid process‑operations knowledge, and flexible availability for on‑call or emergency situations. Proficiency with Google Workspace and knowledge of chemical handling are considered strong assets.
A demonstrated commitment to health and safety and a safety‑focused attitude are essential. Strong leadership, team‑building, analytical, and decision‑making abilities are needed to coach, motivate, and improve operational efficiency. Excellent written and verbal communication, planning, scheduling, and organizational skills are required, as well as the ability to troubleshoot problems independently and proficiency with basic computer applications.
