The Plant Manager – Recycling role at Waste Management is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of environmental safety and operational excellence by overseeing the day‑to‑day operations of an assigned Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) while maintaining cost control.
Key duties include managing the gatehouse, sorting and loading areas, minimizing handling and operational costs, and continuously reducing truck turnaround times. The manager regularly proposes operational improvements, serves as a liaison for community relations, and guarantees compliance with WM’s Mission to Zero safety and regulatory standards. Budget preparation, data analysis, and timely reporting are also essential, as is fostering a positive, team‑oriented environment through employee development and motivation.
Personnel oversight involves selecting, coaching, training, and evaluating staff, providing input on compensation, promotions, and terminations, and conducting regular safety meetings and training presentations. The manager also ensures the MRF property remains clean and well‑maintained through inspections and preventive‑maintenance programs with supervisors and employees.
Supervisory responsibilities extend to direct and indirect oversight of full‑time employees, including the Plant Maintenance Manager, Plant Supervisors, Scalehouse Attendants, and administrative support staff.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or a related field (or a high school diploma/GED with four years of relevant experience) plus at least seven years of relevant work experience.
The role may require a REAL ID or TSA‑approved alternative for air travel, and the company emphasizes a “People First” culture focused on growth, family, stability, and a sustainable tomorrow.
Work is performed in a hybrid setting—part office, part plant—and may involve occasional physical effort, exposure to dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes. The expected base salary range is $92,000 to $107,910, adjusted for experience, education, and location.
Employees receive a competitive total compensation package that includes medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑term disability, a stock purchase plan, pension, paid vacation, holidays, and personal days, although benefits can vary by site.
