Senior Staff Engineer, Engineering (Battery Storage)

Description

The Senior Staff Engineer will support project development and technical design of utility‑scale battery storage projects across North America. This role is based on‑site at Invenergy’s headquarters in downtown Chicago, Illinois.

• Interface with battery, inverter, and padmount transformer OEMs to obtain technical information and stay updated on technology trends.
• Prepare conceptual project layouts using QGIS, CAD, or Visio and optimize them for maximum project value.
• Conduct site visits for evaluation, suitability, and due‑diligence efforts.
• Assist the Development team with federal, state, county, and local permitting.
• Support team initiatives such as safety and material/process template improvement.
• Manage layout and design of the battery array, coordinating with vendors for design compatibility.
• Collaborate with Electrical Engineering to support system design and compliance.
• Interface with Project Management and Operations teams through commercial operations.
• Ensure timely and complete transfer of technical responsibilities.
• Participate in landowner meetings, community outreach events, and monthly construction meetings.
• Work with Structured Finance to respond to lender and independent engineer due‑diligence questions.
• Work with Procurement and battery manufacturers to quote systems meeting RFP requirements.
• Prepare pricing models for various storage energy system use cases.
• Determine project sizing and operational requirements based on market drivers, customer needs, RFP requirements, and Invenergy’s Basis of Design.
• Coordinate with Project Management to estimate construction and commercial costs.
• Support Development and Origination teams in preparing sales proposals.

Requirements

• BS in Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline (e.g., Physics, Material Science, Environmental Science).
• At least 2 years of engineering or related technical experience, preferably in renewable energy.
• Willingness to travel up to 20 % of the time.
• Eligible to work in the United States without employer visa sponsorship now or in the future.
• MS in Electrical, Chemical, or Mechanical Engineering (preferred).
• Familiarity with LFP chemistry and battery cell, module, rack, and enclosure designs.
• Knowledge of procurement, integration, and construction processes for renewable facilities and battery storage projects.
• Experience with contract negotiations and electrical engineering design.
• Familiarity with DC/AC inverters or DC/DC converters.
• Knowledge of communication protocols such as Modbus, TCP/IP, CANbus, or DNP3.
• Experience modeling energy project economics (NPV, IRR, LCOE).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Ability to multitask and manage multiple project deliverables.
• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Demonstrated interest in renewable energy and ability to work in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.

• Base salary range $82,000–$105,000 plus a 15 % annual bonus.
