The Principal Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer provides senior technical leadership for high‑voltage transmission line projects ranging from 132 kV to 765 kV. The role covers greenfield designs, asset upgrades, reconductoring, thermal uprating, foundation strengthening, line cut‑ins, and asset renewal schemes, spanning concept through construction. Responsibilities include hands‑on design, technical review, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Plan, schedule, and execute HV transmission line projects from concept to construction.
- Prepare cost estimates, project budgets, and resource allocation plans.
- Coordinate with project managers, clients, and stakeholders to meet project requirements.
- Lead technical delivery and design of transmission line engineering packages.
- Develop line alignments, profiles, and structure spotting using PLS‑CADD.
- Perform sag‑tension analysis and verify clearances per EN 50341 and NG TS 2.04.
- Produce design deliverables such as plan/profile drawings, stringing charts, structure schedules, and loading reports.
- Assess tower and pole loading and coordinate foundation designs with geotechnical input.
- Model towers or poles using PLS‑TOWER or PLS‑POLE and conduct strength and stability checks.
- Design or review foundations (pad, pile, raft, grillage) in collaboration with geotechnical engineers.
- Select conductors, earth‑wires, and OPGW based on system and environmental criteria.
- Perform insulation coordination, BIL rating, and insulator string design studies.
- Evaluate electrical clearances, thermal ratings, shielding angles, and lightning protection.
- Contribute to EMF, induction, and line‑loss analysis and coordinate termination interfaces.
- Participate in design reviews, QA/verification, and constructability assessments.
- Mentor junior engineers and drive continuous improvement through lessons learned.
- Support delivery of construction‑ready drawings and material schedules.

The position requires expertise in civil, structural, mechanical, or electrical engineering. Civil/structural engineers focus on tower/pole modeling, foundation design, and constructability assessments, while electrical engineers select conductors, perform insulation coordination, and evaluate clearances and thermal ratings.
Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in an applicable engineering discipline and have 2–8 years of experience in HV overhead line design and delivery. Chartered or professional engineer status is preferred, and a proven record of delivering a range of OHL projects is essential.
