The Chief Data Center Engineer leads the engineering team in safely operating and maintaining data center machinery and systems, while responding promptly to tenant needs and protecting the owner’s assets.
This senior role oversees daily operations, ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards, and collaborates with contractors, design engineers, and emergency services to maintain optimal facility performance.
- Verify and submit accurate time records for operating engineers.
- Track overtime and ensure costs stay within budget.
- Conduct monthly inspections of data center facilities and equipment.
- Generate work orders and requisitions for repairs or replacements.
- Report deficiencies and develop action plans for senior engineering staff.
- Implement fire safety programs, coordinate drills, and liaise with emergency services.
- Assist in tenant construction projects and review blueprints for technical compliance.
- Manage energy usage through documented operational procedures and staff training.
- Oversee purchase orders, vendor selection, and competitive bidding for MEP contracts.
- Perform and document testing of data center systems, recommending operational changes.
- Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies, evaluating vendors quarterly.
- Supervise lead operating engineers and operating engineers, including hiring, training, performance appraisal, and discipline.

The position includes direct supervision of lead and operating engineers, handling hiring, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions, and requires extensive knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automation, and life‑safety systems.
- High school diploma/GED plus 5‑7 years of JLL or equivalent engineering experience.
- 3‑5 years of supervisory or lead engineer experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of data center HVAC, electrical, plumbing, automation, and fire protection systems.
- Familiarity with relevant codes, standards, and ability to interpret technical documents.
- Ability to interact professionally with tenants, contractors, and emergency authorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access) and facility management software (Corrigo, ServiceNow).
- Physical ability to lift 50 lb, climb ladders up to 30 ft, and work on rooftops and heights.
- Availability for on‑call rotation, holidays, and emergency response.
- Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
