The Sr. Relay Technician leads and performs electrical testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protective relays in power stations. Duties include using relay test equipment to evaluate various relay types within substations and ensuring proper operation of control circuits. The role also involves supervising projects, coordinating with customers, and delivering final documentation such as as‑built drawings and test results.
- Lead safety briefings on job site, identify, eliminate, or mitigate hazards
- Utilize Human Performance Error Elimination concepts and tools
- Analyze protection schemes for power circuits and other system components
- Perform installation, commissioning, testing, and function testing of substation control circuits and equipment change‑outs
- Analyze event records and make informed deductions
- Develop project execution, commissioning, outage sequence, and energization procedures
- Manage large‑scale, complex projects
- Train and qualify Relay Technician I, II, or Relay Engineer I
- Interact with customers
- Perform complex troubleshooting
- Conduct end‑to‑end relay testing using software and analyze fault‑type operations
- Lead investigations of electrical issues, including root cause analysis
- Calibrate and test electromechanical and microprocessor‑based protective relays
- Serve as on‑site lead, assign tasks, prioritize activities, and interface with customers
- Read and interpret protection and control schematics, identifying design errors
- Determine customer requirements and deliver as‑built prints and test results
- Troubleshoot distribution and transmission control circuits

- Understand manufacturers’ literature to facilitate testing
- Pass pre‑employment drug screen
- Complete satisfactory criminal background check
- Work overtime and travel out of town as needed
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and safe driving record
- Hands‑on experience installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing protective relays in transmission, generation, or distribution substations
- Knowledge of relay test software
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, or similar equipment
- Bachelor’s or associate degree in electrical/electronic technology, military experience, or 4‑year engineering degree (preferred)
- 5+ years relevant industry experience
- NETA III/IV certification (preferred)
- Ability to climb ladders, stand for extended periods, and lift up to 70 lb
