The incumbent is responsible for engineering performance across all project phases—from scoping and budgeting to conceptual design, contract management, construction, and closeout. This includes performing complex analyses, creating new conceptual designs that adhere to Avangrid standards, overseeing external designers, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, and providing technical leadership on the most complex projects.
The role also mentors and develops the engineering team, acts as the subject‑matter expert, and serves as the primary liaison with contractors on policy, standards, and best practices while working independently with minimal supervision. Mentorship and technical guidance are core expectations of the position.
Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Master’s preferred) and at least ten years of relevant experience. Candidates must demonstrate strong theoretical and practical engineering knowledge, expertise in planning, operations, design, construction, economic analysis, regulatory compliance, and, for smart‑grid projects, networking, computer security, and database fundamentals.
Additional competencies encompass deep knowledge of utility substation and transmission/distribution line design, a thorough understanding of regulatory environments and incentive mechanisms, and behavioral strengths such as collaboration, empowerment, agility, and results‑orientation. The Principal Engineer – Lines position is located in Augusta, ME and offers a salary range of $114,332‑$145,800, office work, and a comprehensive benefits package that includes a sign‑on bonus and relocation assistance.
