The Mechanic/Operator installs, repairs, operates, monitors and maintains plant equipment—including chillers, high‑pressure boilers, and auxiliary systems—to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient service of steam and chilled water to customers. This full‑time, non‑exempt union position reports to the Plant Manager, is located in Kansas City, MO, and offers an hourly wage of $29.00‑$44.00 plus a 10 % bonus target.
- Install, repair, troubleshoot, control, and maintain chillers, steam turbines, HP boilers, valves, traps, expansion joints, piping systems, auxiliary equipment, and distribution systems.
- Verify equipment pressure and temperature limits are met.
- Perform chemical analysis on boiler water samples.
- Conduct precision alignment and measurement.
- Install mechanical seals, belts, couplings, and work with hydraulic, pneumatic, or city water systems.
- Operate and regenerate cold‑water zeolites for boiler water production.
- Maintain operational logs as required.
- Monitor equipment, identify problems, develop resolutions, and prepare work permits and work orders.
- Perform inspections, predictive and preventive maintenance, and repairs on valves, pumps, turbines, chillers, and distribution equipment.
- Provide on‑the‑job training to new employees.
- Plan, schedule, and prioritize daily activities.
- Communicate timely information to management and team members.
- Ensure task completion, operational efficiency, and reliability to meet unit and corporate goals.
- Lock out/tag out equipment for maintenance and test after repairs per procedures.
- Monitor and maintain plant and equipment cleanliness.
- Perform all work according to established safety procedures and company policies.
- Work rotating shifts, including holidays, nights, and weekends.

Employees must meet physical requirements such as standing, climbing, lifting up to 50 lb regularly, and maneuvering up to 100 lb, while wearing required personal protective equipment. A valid driver’s license, pre‑employment physical exam, drug screening, and a Kansas City Operating Engineers License within three years are also required.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 3 years of pipe‑fitting experience and steam plant maintenance of boilers, turbines, pumps, valves, and traps.
- Navy nuclear experience.
- Technical trade school training.
- Ability to use computer and calculator.
- Excellent punctuality and attendance.
- Ability to weld and pass site welding exam.
- Boiler or power plant experience.
- Chiller/chilled water system experience.
- Proficiency with rigging, hoisting, welding, cutting, brazing, and pipe fitting.
- Obtain Kansas City Operating Engineers License within 3 years.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass pre‑employment physical exam and drug screening.
- Ability to stand, sit, climb stairs, bend, stoop, push, pull, walk on uneven surfaces, and work from elevated platforms.
- Lift up to 50 lb regularly and maneuver approximately 100 lb.
- Qualify to wear a respirator and tolerate confined spaces and varying temperatures.
- Exposure to temperature extremes, high noise, high‑pressure steam, rotating equipment, and dusty environments.
- Required PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, safety shoes, hearing protection, and other protective gear.
