Apprentices are expected to maintain high safety awareness, monitor baggage systems through bespoke computer interfaces, configure routes and input operational data, and respond to changing conditions. They communicate fault information to internal and external colleagues, proactively identify bags at risk, perform tag traces and compile daily analysis reports, while also training new staff and supporting the BCCR team during incidents.
The BCCR Control Room Operator Apprentice program combines study at Uxbridge College with hands‑on work in the Baggage Combined Control Room at London Heathrow. Apprentices work towards a Team Leader qualification and, upon completion, transition to a full‑time Control Room Operator role, contributing to the strategic objective of ‘every bag, every passenger, every time safely’.
Vanderlande looks for candidates with an enthusiastic, proactive and flexible attitude. A minimum of five GCSEs at grades A*‑C (or 9‑4) including Maths and English, an interest in operations and continuous improvement, and a motivated mindset are considered essential.
