The position involves contributing to concept studies, strategies, and drawing packages that lead to planning applications, technical approvals, and construction issues. You will work on a variety of development projects across sectors, often handling several projects simultaneously, and receive support from the Edinburgh team to build technical capabilities and progress your career.
Client engagement, stakeholder management and liaison with internal and external design teams are key parts of the role, with responsibility for delivering tasks on budget, programme, technical standards and legal requirements.
The team helps clients promote, implement and manage sustainable development from pre‑feasibility to planning consent, providing multidisciplinary design from concept through detailed design and construction. Services include civil engineering, highways design, utilities and energy planning, drainage and flood risk, site appraisal and strategic planning advice.
At WSP you can access global scale, contribute to landmark projects, connect with the brightest minds, and shape a career unique to you. The culture celebrates curiosity, new ideas, and diverse perspectives.
We are looking for candidates with knowledge of highway design, drainage strategy, flood risk assessment, utility design and the wider development industry. An appreciation of hydraulics, hydrology, geotechnics and building structures, and understanding of construction design stages are desirable.
The role requires the ability to produce infrastructure masterplans, site appraisals, technical reports, design calculations and construction drawings under supervision, and familiarity with design codes such as Water UK Sewerage Sector Guidance and the Design Manual for Roads & Bridges. Proficiency in software such as Info Drainage, Micro Drainage, AutoCAD, Civil 3D or PDS is essential.
Experience in liaising with clients, co‑professionals, design teams and statutory authorities to secure technical approvals, and awareness of legal processes, planning and contractual aspects of development projects are important. Post‑graduate experience and progress towards chartership are sought, though we encourage applications from those who may not meet every criterion.
Benefits include a hybrid working policy (two days remote), support for work‑life balance through flexible “WSP My Hour”, inclusive culture with employee resource groups, health and wellbeing programmes such as Thrive, virtual GP access, Gymflex discounts and menopause support, and development opportunities through training, mentoring and chartership support.
