If you’re passionate about mentoring others, delivering innovative solutions, and making a real impact across the 33/66/132kV networks, this is your opportunity to power up your career. In this technical leadership role, you’ll work with the EHV team manager to lead the development of the EHV design team’s skills, provide expert guidance designers, and ensure the delivery of successful customer-focused designs.

  • Work with other business units to develop/implement smart solutions for our customers
  • Proactively identify improvements to our engineering policy & business processes working closely with all business units
  • Represent NPg (as necessary) on industry working groups
  • The preparation and successful authorisation of Investment Appraisal Documents for customer driven applications seeking connection onto the EHV & 132kV network
  • Liaise directly with representatives of key stakeholders e.g. Network Rail
  • Liaise with NGESO/NGET for Project Progressions and Modification Applications.
  • Complete the post acceptance elements of customer driven work including stability studies and interface with customers accordingly
  • Management of the customer experience for all technical aspects relating to their EHV connection solutions
  • Maintain/improve the quality and timeliness of designs within the Guaranteed Standards framework
  • Ensure EHV designs meet appropriate policies & regulatory requirements

We’re looking for a driven and technically skilled Lead EHV Design Engineer to join our Engineering Directorate at Northern Powergrid.

At Northern Powergrid, we’re committed to delivering safe, reliable electricity to 3.9 million homes and businesses. We work collaboratively across Commercial, Operations, and Major Projects to deliver smart, future-ready solutions—and we’re looking for someone who shares that vision.

  • Operational experience up to/including 132kV
  • Knowledge of Electrical Power Networks including Protection Systems
  • IT Skills – able to use a variety of software tools to produce electrical designs and update database
  • Communication – able to communicate in an effective and persuasive manner
  • Strong Analytical skills
  • Experience in managing multiple priorities
  • Network Design experience at 33/66/132kV
  • Switchgear and Plant specifications
  • Usage of MS Office packages, Powerfactory, DINIS, IPSA or other modeling software.
  • Experience in producing technical reports and financial appraisal documents
  • Strong Analytical and decision-Making skills
  • Full UK driving license
  • Team working – able to work with others in a flexible manner
  • Technically adept in the area of EHV /132kV network design
  • System Modelling and power flow analysis
  • Customer Service – able to deliver effective customer service both internally and externally
  • Degree in Electrical Power System Engineering
  • HNC in Electrical Power Engineering
