The Principal Civil Engineer role provides technical leadership for data centre projects, covering everything from site due diligence and master‑planning to detailed design and construction support. This position drives business growth, strengthens client relationships, and expands AECOM’s civil engineering capabilities within the data centre sector.

Working within the Civil Engineering Business Unit, the role collaborates with ground, structural, mechanical, electrical engineers, architects, project managers, environmental specialists, and surveyors across the UK and overseas. Acting as an AECOM ambassador, the engineer contributes expertise to major technology clients and reinforces the firm’s position in the hyperscale and co‑location data centre market.

Provide strategic civil engineering leadership and technical governance for data centre projects, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations.
Lead, review and approve infrastructure designs and specifications for site development, earthworks, drainage, pavements, access and utilities.
Coordinate multidisciplinary teams—including ground, electrical, mechanical, structural engineers, architects, project managers and environmental consultants—across the UK and globally.
Support client engagement, business development, strategic asset planning and sector thought leadership while mentoring civil engineers.

Hold a degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
Be a Chartered Engineer (CEng, MICE) or operate at chartered level with demonstrated leadership.
Have extensive experience delivering complex civil infrastructure projects, preferably in data centres or large‑scale developments.
Possess strong knowledge of planning, highways, drainage and utility approval processes.
Demonstrate a proven track record as Design Lead or Principal Technical Authority within multidisciplinary teams.
Understand BIM modelling and collaborative platforms with practical experience.
