Design Engineers provide professional civil engineering services, including planning, design, specifications, reports, construction observation, and project management. They delegate and supervise tasks to CADD Technicians, Graduate Engineers, and Field Technicians, while maintaining frequent communication with supervisors and project managers throughout all project phases. Attendance at company, project, and client meetings is expected, as is participation in proposal preparation and business development activities. The role may evolve into Project Manager or Client Manager responsibilities, overseeing budgets and financial performance, and requires effective public communication during involvement meetings and construction notifications. Engineers must independently exercise sound judgment, serve as the on‑site representative during construction, and continually develop proficiency with CAD software while adhering to company and client procedures, safety policies, and ethical standards.
Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and preferably a Professional Engineer license in Minnesota or North Dakota, or be able to obtain one within 6‑12 months. At least five years of highway or roadway design experience is preferred, along with knowledge of MNDOT or NDDOT design processes. Proficiency in Bentley OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation Connect, and corridor modeling is highly desired, while experience with AutoCAD/Civil 3D, municipal projects, and underground utilities is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication, detail orientation, self‑motivation, and proficiency with Microsoft Office are required, as is a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain one.
The position requires normal ergonomic computer work as well as outdoor work during the construction season, including prolonged standing, walking, and the ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds. Employees must adhere to scheduled work hours and be prepared for overtime, especially during peak construction periods. Reasonable accommodations are available to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Apex Engineering Group offers a competitive hourly base pay of $40‑$55, dependent on experience, education, licensure, location, and internal equity, along with performance‑based bonuses.
