Engineer (Bridges)

Description

The role is that of an Engineer working on a variety of transportation and infrastructure bridge design projects. You will operate within defined budgets, programmes and quality‑assurance frameworks as part of a small team delivering client projects.

Key responsibilities include preparing outline and detailed designs, following and checking procedures throughout delivery, reporting progress to senior engineers and project managers, and applying safety systems to protect staff and the public. You will also contribute to company‑wide improvement goals, support your own professional development, assist senior engineers on bridge surveys, and coordinate with internal disciplines, clients, joint‑venture partners and external contractors to ensure multidisciplinary designs meet project specifications.

• Prepare outline and detailed bridge designs.
• Follow and verify procedures throughout project delivery.
• Report progress to senior engineers, technical leads, and project managers.
• Apply safety procedures to protect staff and the public during the design lifecycle.
• Contribute to company‑wide improvement initiatives.
• Pursue professional development with SYSTRA support and maintain professional body membership.
• Assist senior engineers on bridge surveys and prepare reports and recommendations.
• Coordinate with internal disciplines, project managers, and external engineers for multidisciplinary design delivery.
• Liaise with clients, joint‑venture partners, and contractors, attending meetings as required.
• Ensure compliance with construction standards, commercial contracts, CDM and CSM regulations.
• Use bridge calculation software (e.g., MIDAS, SuperSTRESS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design) where applicable.
• Produce quality deliverables in line with industry best practice.
• Be aware of commercial and contract conditions affecting budgets and timescales.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has a solid grounding in civil or structural engineering, an understanding of construction principles and relevant standards, and experience delivering design work under supervision. You should be aware of commercial and contract conditions, CDM and CSM regulations, and be comfortable using bridge analysis software such as MIDAS, SuperSTRESS or Autodesk Structural Bridge Design. A BEng/MEng degree (or equivalent) and graduate membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., ICE or IStructE) are required.

• Demonstrate good knowledge of civil/structural engineering and awareness of interfacing disciplines.
• Understand construction principles and relevant standards.
• Hold a BEng/MEng degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).
• Possess graduate membership of a recognised professional body (e.g., ICE, IStructE).
